By A Staff Reporter,Dadeldhura, Aug. 2: The Nepal Army has marked the 207th Memorial Day of Amar Singh Thapa. The Day was observed by offering garland and salutation to the statue of Amar Singh Thapa located at the historical Amargadhi Fort. Thapa, a valorous fighter, was the Western Division Commander during the unification campaign of the country.

The Ram Bam battalion of Nepali Army in Dadeldhura paid their respect to Amar Singh Thapa on the Memorial Day. The statue of Amar Singh Thapa was garlanded under the leadership of Bal Mukunda Thapa, Chief of Ram Bam Daha barracks.

Amargadhi Fort is at an altitude of 6,500 feet above sea level. The fort looks picturesque as huge boulders are used to construct the fort. After Prithvi Narayan Shah’s demise, the unification campaign of Nepal was carried out by his son Bahadur Shah. During Bahadur Shah’s reign, the border of Nepal was extended to Kumau and Garhwal.

Amar Singh Thapa became the administrator of Karnali and the western part after defeating the Doteli forces. It is believed that Amar Singh Thapa built Amargadhi Fort to continue with his victory streak and annex Kangada in the west. But some believe that the fort was built before the reign of Thapa, still the fort is popular by the name of Amargadhi Fort.

The Amargadhi Municipality of Dadeldhura was named after Amargadhi Fort in 2053 BS. Amargadhi Municipality had decided to give public holiday on the Memorial Day of Amar Singh Thapa in 2077 BS. However, that decision was not executed this year. The Chief Administrative Officer of Amargadhi Municipality Laxmi Prasad Upadhaya said that he was not notified about the holiday but he had sent representatives to celebrate the Memorial Day.

The local Government used to organise various programmes, but this year the local government hasn’t shown much interest, said the president of Tourism Infrastructure Development Committee.
