Ten die, 26 go missing in disaster incidents

By TRN Online, Kathmandu, June 20: With the onset of the monsoon of this year, a total of 10 people have lost their lives from incidents of disasters.  

While speaking in a session of House of Representatives (HoR) session today, Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha, informed that 10 people have died in the incidents of disaster so far. 

According to the Home Minister, so far, six people have been reported to have got injured, 26 have gone missing and 54 houses got totally damaged in reported disasters. Sankhuwasabha, Taplejung, and Panchthar districts were affected due to the incessant rainfall since the night of June 17. 

“The onset of monsoon was on June 14 of this year. More effects of this have been observed in the districts of the eastern hills of the country, Sankhuwasabha, Taplejung, and Panchthar. Because of the incessant rainfall from June 17, incidents like floods, inundations, and landslides have been reported, which have resulted in 26 people going missing, six getting injured, ten succumbing to the disasters, and complete damage to 54 houses, triggered by the persistent rainfall,” said Home Minister Shrestha. 

Home Minister Shrestha said that arrangements have been made to provide relief to the families of the deceased as per the Disaster Victim Rescue and Relief Guidelines, 2077 (Seventh Amendment). He said that the funds will be provided for immediate relocation, according to the same guidelines as well. 

“If one member of a family dies then Rs two lakh will be provided as a relief upon death in the family, and if other members of the same family die, then Rs one lakh per person will be provided as a relief. Likewise, arrangements have been made to provide 15 to 20 thousand families whose house got destroyed in the disaster. Other reliefs such flooding and lodging is being provided as per Disaster Victim Rescue and Relief Guidelines, 2077 (Seventh Amendment)”, He said. 

The government is working with all levels for relief, rescue, rehabilitation, and restoration programmes, he said.
