Level-3 Intensive Care Unit service begins in Nepalgunj

BY OUR CORRESPONDENT,Nepalgunj, Mar. 7: Level-3 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) service with the state-of-the-art facilities has been introduced at the Western Hospital of Nepalgunj, first outside the Kathmandu Valley.  

 Dr. Rahul Thapa, Managing Director of the Western Hospital, said that earlier the service was available only in three private hospitals of Kathmandu.

He said that an eight-bed level-3 ICU service has been brought into operation with the aim of making the treatment services to sick patients as effective as possible. 

From now on, no critically ill patient will has to go to Kathmandu or Lucknow in India to receive treatment, said Thapa.  

According to Dr. Thapa, the hospital was the first private hospital outside the Kathmandu Valley to operate the ICU with such facilities. Under this service, arrangements have been made for each patient admitted to the ICU to have a trained dedicated nurse as well as a 24-hour critical care consultant doctor on duty.

The health indicator information system has been installed in the ICU as approved by the World Health Organisation, said Dr. Paras Pandey, chief of ICU at the hospital. Also, Western Hospital has introduced 6-bed HDU service and dialysis services through 3-level ICU services. 

The hospital has state-of-the-art equipment including six ventilators. In a few days, six-bed NICU service will also be brought into operation. According to the hospital management, about Rs. 50 million has been invested to add the facilities including the ICU.

The 100-bed hospital has been providing orthopedic, trauma, general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, nose, ear and throat, general medicine, maxillofacial surgery and urology services. The hospital is also making preparations to run pediatric, mental illness, neurosurgery and dialysis services in the near future.
