Charles Sobhraj deported to France

By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Dec. 24: Notorious serial killer Charles Gurumukh Sobhraj, a French national, has been deported to his country on Friday evening via Qatar Airways. Sobhraj, 78, before his release from the Central Jail, Sundhara, was handed over to the Department of Immigration Friday afternoon after completing necessary procedures from Thursday.

The Department deported him to his home country after completing necessary process by this afternoon via Qatar Airways flight number QR-647 at 6:00 pm, Pradarshani Kumari, Acting Director General for the Department told The Rising Nepal. He will be in transit in Doha and from there, will be directly taken to France, where he will be received by the French police. Information regarding his deportation has been sent there, said Kumari.

A division bench of Supreme Court Justices Sapana Pradhan Malla and Til Prasad Shrestha ordered his release on Wednesday and be sent to the respective country within 15 days.

As Sobhraj, who had already served 19 years and three months in jail term in the murder cases of an American and a Canadian woman, the Apex Court ordered that 75 per cent of his sentence be pardoned under his age ground. According to Acting DG Kumari, the Nepal government has also decided that Sobhraj cannot enter Nepal for next 10 years.

He was convicted and imprisoned for the murder of Canadian woman Carriere Laurent and American citizen Connie Joe Bronzich who came to visit Nepal in 1975. Bronzich was killed in Bhaktapur on December 21, 1975 and Carriere three days after Laurent’s murder.
