Commercial production of potato chips begins in Humla

By Our Correspondent,Humla, Dec.12: Potato chips commercially produced in the Himalayan district of Humla  have been brought to the market.Until now potato chips have been coming to Humla from other districts by air, but now a local entrepreneur has started producing potato chips from locally grown potatoes and selling them in the market.

Tuthasara Bohara, owner of Sanjay Agricultural Firm, said that he started producing and selling potato chips commercially with a private investment. He said that the sale of local potato chips is good because the product is delicious as well as of good quality, he said.

He said that there is no problem in the market. “In the first lot, 1,000 packets of chips were produced and sold successfully,” he said.A packet of  chips weighing 40 grams is priced at Rs. 50. He said that the packaging was also done at the local level. He said that he would produce the chips commercially round the year.

He said that his target was to increase the income and displace the chips supplied from outside.The firm has also installed a machine worth Rs. 80,000. Currently, the Bohara couple has been producing chips together.

Potato production is good in Humla. Bohara said that he started this business because he saw a good future. He is planning to produce and sell 20,000 packets of chips this year.
