BY GOKARNA DAYAL,Baitadi, Nov. 15 : Pallo Dhulidhar of Surnaya Rural Municipality of Baitadi district is reeling under the acute shortage of drinking water.
Most of the women here are suffering from uterine prolapse, but they are compelled to walk two hours to fetch water every day.
The locals are now raising same unsolved problem of drinking water with the candidates of the elections to be held on November 20.
The voters who demanded drinking water in the 2074 B.S. election have said that their demand had not been addressed even in five years. Bharat Bista, a local, said that the promise made by the candidates to supply drinking water is limited only in the election agenda.
They asked for votes promising to provide drinking water but after the election they forgot their promises and the demands of locals remain unfulfilled, said Bista.
“Our main demand with the candidates is water supply in the village. As there is no water in the village, we are compelled to carry water from the river walking for more than two hours.”
The main problem of Dhulidhar, where about 50 households are, is the problem of drinking water, he added.
Saraswati Bista, a local woman, said that they are facing severe water shortage due to the dilapidated state of the village's old water supply project, which was built in 1993. She said that she had to walk for two hours to carry water.
Keshav Bista, another local, said that despite the assurance during the election campaign that the water supply problem would be solved, the problem remained the same for years as no candidate returned to the village after winning the election.
"This time, we have said that we will only vote for the candidate who will solve the problem of drinking water. Solving the problem of drinking water will be our priority."
The residents of Pallo Dhulidhar also demanded drinking water in the last local level elections.
However, Chandra Bahadur Bista, a local, complained that no one has taken any initiative for solving the drinking water problem so far.
Janak Bista, a differently-abled person, said that Dhulidhar residents would feel the presence of development in the village only if they got drinking water and a black-topped road so that the vehicles could ply throughout the year.
Being a differently abled person, Bista expressed his pain that he could not even bathe for months as he could not walk to the river.
