Jaleshwor, Sept 7 : A herd of wild elephants that entered a human settlement in Hattitole, Bardibas Municipality-8, destroyed four houses Tuesday morning.  The tuskers from the nearby forest entered the settlement at 2 am on Tuesday and completely destroyed the houses of  Jeet Bahadur Yonjan, Jaya Kishun Mahato, Buddhiman Singhden, and Som Bahadur Tamang.

Jaya Kishun Mahato, one of the victims, said that he had to run away from his home with his wife and son to save lives after the herd of elephants attacked their house all of sudden in midnight.  “It felt like an earthquake while I was asleep. I was scared to death seeing elephants right in front. I woke up my wife and son and we ran from the back door” he added.

Although the locals had chased away the elephants, they were terrified that the tuskers would again enter the settlement, said Som Bahadur Tamang.

Wild elephant attack has, of late, been a perennial problem in the Dhanusha and Mahottari districts of Madhes province.

Earlier on Sunday, seven houses were destroyed by the elephants in Dhalkebar of Dhanusha.

The locals have assumed that the same elephants might have reached Hattitole by crossing the Badahari Khola.
