Tiger attacks in Banke-Bardiya: 29 people killed in 5 years

By Siraj Khan, Nepalgunj, June 23: 29 people have been killed in tigers attack in Banke and Bardiya national parks in the last five years.  

According to Banke and Bardiya National Parks, 23 in Bardiya national park and 6 people have been killed in Banke national park in the last five years.

It has been said that after the increment in tiger numbers the rise of tiger attack events has increased the death tolls from the attack of the tigers in both national parks. 

Chief Conservation Officer at the Bardiya National Park Bishnu Prasad Shrestha said that five people have been killed by the tigers in the current fiscal year. Similarly, 12, the highest number of people were killed in tigers attacks in the fiscal year 2077-078 BS and six people have lost their lives in tiger attacks in the fiscal year 2076-077.  

He said that habitat loss of tigers due to the increment of the tiger number, rising events of forest encroachment and the development of Physical Infrastructure have increased the human-wildlife conflict in Bardiya National Park. 

According to Shrestha, work has begun to maintain the existence of both humans and wildlife by preparing five years strategic plan. 

In 2018, 87 tigers were recorded in Bardiya National Park whereas there were only 18 tigers in 2009. 

According to Information Office at the Banke National Park Kum Narayan Chaudhary in the last five years, six people were killed in tiger attacks.

National Park has said that there were 21 tigers recorded in the national park in the census of 2018 and it is expected to rise in numbers in the upcoming tiger census this year.
