Dharan, May 22 (RSS): Independent candidate Harkaraj Rai has been elected mayor of Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City in Sunsari district.
Rai emerged victorious with 20,821 votes defeating his closest contender Kishore Rai of Nepali Congress, who got 16,059 votes. Rai was the common candidate of the five-party ruling coalition contesting for the mayoral post.
Similarly, Aindra Bikram Begha, a common candidate from the ruling coalition and representing CPN (Maoist Centre), has been elected the deputy mayor of the Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City.
He garnered 20,510 votes and was elected to the post. His nearest rival CPN (UML)'s Padam Prasad Limbu conceded defeat with 17,606 votes.
There are altogether 20 wards in Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City where NC candidates secured wins in ward no. 1,3,9,11,16,18 and 20 while CPN (UML) won in ward no. 2,4,5,7,8,10,12,13,15,17 and 19.
Likewise, an independent candidate won in ward no. 6 and Rastriya Prajatantra Party's candidate in ward no 14.
