Book on “Media in Province” launched

By A Staff Reporter Kathmandu, May 3: A book “Media in Province” published by the Centre for Media Research Nepal was released on Monday.  The book examines the state of the media in all seven provinces of the country.

According to the book, there are 8,953 media in Nepal. Of them, 4789 are magazines, 880 FM radios, 164 televisions and 3120 online news outlets. The number of journalists who have registered with the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) is 13,077.

Among the provinces, Bagmati has the largest number of media and journalists. There are 5,051 media outlets and 5,776 journalists in the Province.

The book also analyses the statistics of newspapers, radio, TV and online media based on their registration on the Department of Information and Broadcasting by the third week of February 2022, and the newspapers and online news media registered with Press Council Nepal. Releasing the book, Professor P. Kharel said that integrated data of the media would help understand the situation of the media at the federal, province and district levels.

President of the Federation of Nepali Journalists Bipul Pokharel said that it would be difficult to identify the problems facing by the media and media persons without having their accurate statistics.

Chief Officer of the Press Council Nepal Jhabindra Bhusal said that there were problems in the media in lack of authentic statistics.

Rewati Sapkota, communication registrar of Bagmati Province, said that coordination between the Province and the centre was necessary to manage the data of newspapers, radio, television and online. He said that Bagmati Province was doing homework to keep the media details online. Trishna Acharya,  chairperson of the Center for Media Research Nepal, said that the book was published to provide information of the integrated statistics and the current status of the media in Nepal.
