Kathmandu, Apr. 29: Inspector General of Nepal Police (IGP) Shailesh Thapa Kshetri has said that unprecedented works were done in favour of lower level police personnel during his tenure.

Speaking at a press conference at the Police Headquarters, Naxal on Wednesday, Inspector General Thapa, who is retiring on May 2 after completing 30 years in service, said, "Every IGP used to be accused of focusing and giving more attention to the promotion of senior police officers, but throughout my tenure, I have tried to clear this misconception by promoting thousands of junior police personnel at one time.”

According to him, the morale of a large number of police personnel have been boosted by adding three more posts for lower level police personnel.

Recently, the government had decided to add the posts of Senior Deputy Inspector of Police, Senior Police Constable and Assistant Constable to the Nepal Police.

"During my tenure, about 15,000 new vacancies were filled. Promotion was a good thing in terms of morale," he said. He also reminded that he has done important works for the most neglected post of police office assistants.

IGP Thapa said that he had tried to protect the police from political interference during his tenure.

"However, Nepal Police is not an independent institution, its role and performance depends upon the government and the Home Ministry’s vision and determination to drive it according to the law and regulations," IGP Thapa said.He said that his role as the IGP was to make attempt to bring 'interference' in the interest of the organisation. "If it is not in the interest of the organisation, then it should be channelised. Policy reforms have been made for that," Thapa said.
