Failed Bids To Form New Parties
Last week, two stalwarts of the Nepali politics -- Dr. Babu Ram Bhattarai and Bamdev Gautam -- came crashing down to join in the Maoist political bandwagon headed by Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda declaring that they or their parties or groups will contest the upcoming federal and provincial polls under the banner of CPN-Maoist Centre. In fact, Dr. Bhattarai had shot into political prominence as one of the key Maoist ideologues and decade-long war strategists. He had played the risky role of a dissident leader within the Maoist party known for militarist bias. Moreover, he had played the key role of spearheading the process in conducting negotiations for mainstreaming the Maoists into the democratic process that ushered into signing of the Comprehensive Peace Accord (CPA). He had had the privilege and opportunity to head the coalition government during the interim political period.
Need To Make Teaching Less Stressful
All careers are challenging if they are not taken seriously. Every job is tough until we gather necessary skills and enough experience to perform it. In the job market, teaching is becoming the most stressful career. There are, of course, pretty good reasons why teaching is superior to any careers. However, there are often times when teachers are forced to update with changing curriculums, teaching guidelines and educational standards set by the government. They are always in a consistent engagement of reworking, rewriting and re-submitting the lesson plans. They are expected to spend a lot of time in the professional skill development like trainings and seminars.
Sustainable Finance
With the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Paris Climate Agreement, green or sustainable finance has received considerable attention in global economics. Nepal’s banking sector, too, is not exception. The Nepal Rastra Bank has issued Environmental and Social Risk Management (ESRM) guideline in May 2018. The guideline requires Banks and Financial Institutions (BFIs) to integrate environmental and social risk management into their overall credit risk management process. Though some banks have designated officials for screening credit proposals to ensure the compliance of ESRM guideline, the majority of banks have still failed to effectively implement the idea of sustainable finance.
Sheep rearing loses its charm in Rukum East
Until a decade ago, almost every household in Putha Uttarganga Rural Municipality of Rukum Eastern district used to rear sheep. But now only a handful are giving continuity to their traditional occupation. Ram Kumar Budha Magar of Ward No. 11 of Putha Uttarganga recalls how the villagers used to pass the days rearing sheep during old times. But now in his old age, Ram Kumar cannot rear the sheep. “I was involved in sheep farming for 30 years. Two years ago, I sold all of my sheep. I didn’t want to, but I couldn’t look after them in this old age alone,” said Ram Kumar.
Khotang's Salpa Pond attracting visitors
Salpa Pond is situated at Salpasilichho Rural Municipality of Khotang district. However, it is also the junction spot of four districts – Khotang, Solukhumbu, Bhojpur and Sankhuwasabha. The pond attracts visitors with its beauty and religious importance and is turning as a major tourism destination of Province 1. Situated at an altitude of 4,043 metres from the sea level, the pond can also be reached from all the four districts. From Khotang’s headquarters Diktel, one can head towards the pond by reaching Mundum Foot Trail via Talkharka and Maiyungdanda. A route also reaches the pond through Sungdel of Khotang.
Sukilumba Airport awaiting resumption of flights
No flights have taken off from Ilam’s Sukilumba Airport for the past three months. Tara Air was the only airliner flying to the only airport of Ilam, which had come into operation only in February this year. It operated two flights every week for about three months from February 23 to May 20 this year. However, it has not made any flight since then citing runway damage. The then Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Prem Ale and former Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal had inaugurated the 700-metre long and 20-metre wide runway on February 13. But even before it got a chance to celebrate its first anniversary, nearly half the eastern section collapsed in May.
