The socio-economic condition of many ex-Kamaiyas (bonded labourers) staying in several western Terai districts of Nepal does not seem to have changed for the better even after 22 years of their liberation. Then government, also led by Sher Bahadur Deuba, had declared Kailali, Kanchanpur, Dang, Banke and Bardiya as Kamaiya-free districts on July 17, 2000. It was really a historic move when it comes to dealing with the protracted issue of bonded labourers. But the problem is that many people have not been rehabilitated so far. Reports show that more than 950 freed-Kamaiya families have been awaiting their resettlement. They are leading a difficult life as they are even deprived of a piece of land to build a permanent residence. Most of these underprivileged people are uneducated and have no personal property. They also do not have any regular source of income.
A flurry of diplomatic activity came to pass last week. It is no wonder that when a high-ranking Chinese leader visits Nepal, top-notch Indian leaders visit Nepal or our senior leaders go to meet their counterparts in India. Such a trend in Nepali politics is a ritual now as China and India wield special clout in the region. Soon after a Chinese communist party leader, Liu Jianchao, who heads the International Liaison Department of Communist Party of China, returned after paying a four-day visit to Nepal, CPN-Maoist Centre chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ hurried to New Delhi. Political analysts see these visits as an outcome of geopolitical obligation to Nepal.

In Gwarko, Patan, a community of five families work day and night to cook puri. The puris they make are sold to pani puri stalls, which are pushed around the city of Kathmandu. In every family in this community, the husband goes to work in the morning, and the children go to a nearby school. The husbands have varied jobs, such as labourers and fruit sellers. When the rest of the family are away, the wives knead and store the dough needed to make the puri. After the family reassembles in the evening, the frying process begins. The children flatten and shape the dough, then stack and pull apart the dough, which is followed by heating the oil. The fathers ensure the dough has been prepared sufficiently and then fry the cut-out pieces.
