By Our Correspondent, Baitadi, Aug 22: Kabir Chand, a former Indian Army soldier under Gorkha Regiment, is now 76-year-old and his wife Bina Chand is 60. They live in Ward No. 7 of Melauli Municipality in the Baitadi district. They remember how the villagers taunted Kabir, an army man, for not being able to give birth to a son, during their young days. Expecting a baby boy every two years, the couple gave birth to a total of eight girls. The couple was saddened by it but the achievements of all the eight daughters have now made them proud as never before.Kabir, the father, said that he at least allowed his daughters to go to school from the beginning even when they were humiliated for not having a son. He also remembers how his wife would deliver every child in the shed due to the lack of a health center. “We gave our daughters access to education and they exceeded our imagination. Villagers have stopped taunting us after seeing our daughters’ achievements,” said septuagenarian Kabir. Out of the eight daughters, four are officers at Nepal Police and Nepali Army, two are teachers and two have recently passed the written examinations for Nepal Police and Nepali Army. The first and second daughters Babita Chand and Manju Chand respectively are teachers in the local school. The third to fifth daughters – Munni Chand, Indra Chand and Anita Chand – are in Nepali Army and the sixth daughter, Sirata Chand, has been in Nepal Police for four years. The remaining two younger daughters – Manisha Chand and Amrita Chand –have recently passed the written examination of both Nepal Police and the Nepali Army and are preparing for an interview with the confidence of getting selected. The sisters have at least passed the intermediate level and even earned Master’s degrees.“We have faced several gender discriminations. Our parents went through humiliation and produced eight daughters in total. Our eldest sisters continued moving forward through the discrimination and we all learn the same,” said Sirata, the sixth sister, who is now in Nepal Police.
