'Foreign-affiliated colleges will be duly regulated'

By A Staff Reporter, Kathmandu, May 25: Minister for Education and Sports Sasmit Pokharel has said that the government will gradually resolve all the problems raised by the local people, including roads, sewage, electricity, and drinking water.

Addressing a public hearing in his constituency, Kathmandu-5, for the first time after the election on Sunday, Minister Pokharel pledged to address all concerns.

Minister Pokharel, who is also an elected member of parliament from RSP, had announced to hold at least one public hearing programme per month during the election.

Minister Pokharel, who is also the government spokesperson, clarified that the government's policy is to move forward based on the suggestions from the citizens.

He expressed confidence that budget allocation and other resources will be ensured based on priorities from the coming year after assessing the physical infrastructure of all community schools across the country. Informing that problems arose when all schools were given the same budget earlier, he mentioned that from next year, the budget will be sent to each community school accordingly.

During the public hearing, the locals complained about school admission fees and sectoral problems such as roads, electricity, and drinking water.

The locals also requested Minister Pokharel to address issues such as student admission fees, drinking water problems, scientific sewage management, street lights, and CCTV management. While responding to the questions raised by the locals, Minister Pokharel expressed his commitment to resolving the issue of street lights and CCTV in coordination with the Kathmandu Metropolitan City.

Meanwhile, at a different programme, Minister Pokharel stated that the government is introducing a new guideline to regulate colleges affiliated with foreign universities.
Minister Pokharel also informed about a new law to monitor foreign university-affiliated colleges, as many complaints were being received regarding such colleges.
Stating that an effective regulation of the foreign university-affiliated colleges is weak , Minister Pokharel informed that the draft of the regulation has been sent to the finance and the law ministries for feedback. 
According to him, once these ministries approve it with their views, the draft will be presented at the Cabinet for approval.
