Experiencing Ilam

blog

Ilam is a small hill town in the eastern part of Nepal. It is famous for green hills, a cool climate, tea gardens, streams, etc. Nepal’s tea hub, in one word, is Ilam. Due to its unique natural beauty, pleasant weather, local hospitality and cultural uniqueness, the place is witnessing a rising number of local and foreign visitors. Kanyam, Fikkal, Antu Danda, Panitar, Maipokhari and Ilam Bazaar are popular places to visit in Eastern Ilam. It could potentially be an unfamiliar tourist spot.

Ilam is a beautiful district with green mountains, which remain green in all seasons. The district is a significant commercial centre as well as an important tourist point. In addition, the place is full of amazing tourist attractions. You would be amazed by the breathtaking natural beauty and the picturesque surroundings. Moreover, these tourist hotspots also form a big part of Nepal’s culture and elevation.

However, one issue that stands in the way of tapping its tourism potential is poor infrastructure. Ilam is already attracting visitors from all over the world and making them taste the flavour of a good tea. However, it is not yet developed to the point that is enough to get visitors to stay for longer and spend more. The hotel, restaurant, transport facility, information and recreational centres, among other facilities, are lacking in many ways. Foreign tourists usually visit developed regions of Nepal like Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, and Everest. The region boasts a reasonable amount of tourism infrastructure, and the cost to travel here is comparatively less.

There are many reasons making the condition of roads in Ilam poor in quality. The rainy season often damages the roads. As the road lacks sub-grade, base and surface course, the rural construction standards are failing to be fulfilled. The situation can get life-threatening as the condition of the roads can worsen on rainy days. That said, the government carries out road repair works time and again through its agencies.  Though there is a domestic airport, flights are not operated regularly, making it difficult to travel.

Home to numerous tea gardens, Ilam is famous for tea. Tourists frequently visit tea gardens to take photos and make videos. They especially love taking Instagram reels in tea gardens.  They also come here to taste the tea. But that appears to be changing, with modern tourists wanting to experience more than just tea gardens. They are increasingly showing keen interest in factory visits, homestays, local food, cultural shows, hiking, bird watching, storytelling, and village-based tourism.  Unless local guides are organised and trained well, visitors may only stop to take a picture and leave without any meaningful involvement.

The primary stakeholders who stand to benefit the most from tourism are farmers, youth, women, small entrepreneurs, and families. In the area of hospitality, training in hygiene, guidelines in serving food, and homestays, among other things, are needed. Ilam cannot be a strong destination on its own because of its natural beauty alone; it needs a massive upgrade in its tourist facilities. Its cultural wealth and uniqueness are powerful magnets. By increasing community participation and upgrading amenities through planned development with environmental safeguards, the tourism potential of Ilam can be tapped fully.
