By TRN Online, Kathmandu, May 1: Shelters at Balkhu-based squatters settlement have been demolished using dozers with heavy security.
District administration office, Kathmandu, had
issued warning on Wednesday to vacate the settlement by Thursday evening as
they were built in public land.
The residents of the settlement were transferring their
goods following the notice till this morning when the dozers were demolishing
their houses.
The government has started campaign to vacate squatters'
settlement built in public land along rivers in the Kathmandu valley. The
second phase of demolishing such settlement has started today and there are preparations
to vacate squatters' settlements in places such as Teku, Banshighat,
Shankhamul, Buddhanagar, Balkhu, Kuleshor, Kapan, Basundhara, Gongabu, Balaju
and Machhapokhari.
In the first phase, settlements at Gairigaun in Sinamangal, Shanti Nagar, Manohara and Thapathali area were vacated and structures pulled down.
