Two rural municipalities of Humla face shortage of salt

By TRN Online, Humla, April 6: Two rural municipalities in the southern region of Humla District are facing a shortage of salt after the company responsible for transporting subsidized salt failed to deliver it on time.

The shortage has affected Tanjakot Rural Municipality and Adanchuli Rural Municipality, where residents rely on subsidized salt supplied through Salt Trading Corporation Limited.

Local Jhul Shahi of Tanjakot Rural Municipality-3 said the shortage occurred because the corporation delayed the transportation of subsidized salt.

“The salt distributed a year ago has already run out, and this year’s supply has not yet been transported, causing the shortage,” he said.

Due to the delay, consumers have been forced to buy salt from the market at Rs. 40 per kilogram, locals complained. Last year, the Salt Trading Corporation had provided 50 kilograms of salt per household.

A similar problem has also been reported in Adanchuli Rural Municipality, where the subsidized salt has yet to arrive.

Jang Rokaya, a local of Adanchuli Rural Municipality-2, said the lack of salt has created difficulties for the community.

“The subsidized salt, which we receive once a year, has not arrived so far this year, causing problems,” he said.

According to Raj Bahadur Lama, chief of the Salt Trading Company in Humla, a quota of 479 quintals of salt had been allocated for Tanjakot Rural Municipality. However, only 340 quintals have so far been transported to the rural municipality headquarters.
