Inaruwa, Oct. 30: Police have launched a 'Dog sniffing' campaign at the Nepal-India border to control drug trafficking in the border area of Sunsari.
As soon as Chhath is over, the police have started mobilsing trained ‘detection dogs’ at the East-West Highway at Tinkune Chowk, Bhantabari, Koshi Rural Municipality-8, Sunsari.
It has been said that a team of 12 Nepal Police and two dogs have started the campaign by checking here. A special police team including trained dogs has been mobilised at the Nepal-India border to control drug trafficking, Superintendent of Police (SP) Keshav Kumar Thebe said.
He said that the District Police Office, Sunsari has deployed a team with specially trained dogs at the Nepal-India border checkpoint at Tinkune, Bhantabari, Koshi Rural Municipality-8. The police have said that this step has been taken to tighten control after illegal drugs started entering the border area continuously.
“It has been found that banned drugs like brown sugar, Corex, Nitrozepam are easily traded across the border and are being transported from here,” said Senior Sub Inspector of Police Punya Prasad Adhikari, Chief of Area Police Office Bhantabari.
“That is why we have started a campaign with specially trained dogs,” he said. According to him, this campaign was officially launched from Bhantabari checkpoint on Tuesday afternoon. As part of the campaign, surveillance and security checking will be further tightened at various border checkpoints in the province, said DSP Yograj Khatiwada, Spokesperson for the District Police Office.
The team consists of 10 Nepal Police and two traffic police, 12 policemen and two dogs. They will increase surveillance at potential drug trafficking locations and conduct regular checking. According to the official, security checks have been started on passengers going to and from India at the checkpoints from the afternoon. The police have stated that they will continue to conduct active surveillance and information-based patrols and checks in the border area.
