By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Sept. 5: A play titled ‘Khamari: Mauna Sambad’, presented by Ek Theatre Nepal, was staged at Mandala Theatre on September 4.
The play, created using the metaphor of the Khamari tree, is said to be related to the environment. Through this production, Ek Theatre is bringing the genre of physical play to the Nepali stage for the first time.
Director Mani K. Rai said that this form of theatre will provide a new taste for Nepali audiences and he is confident they will enjoy it.
He added that, in recent times, humanity has been facing a crisis of climate change due to global warming. This crisis has not been caused by anyone else but by human beings themselves.
Excessive exploitation of nature for selfish purposes has forced humans to confront this challenge. Producer Jayaram Dhakal informed that Khamari has been created focusing on this very issue.
According to Director Rai, Khamari is a rare tree. The play depicts the struggle of a child who tries to nurture its sapling.
Because of the overuse of chemical fertilisers and plastic products driven by human greed for production, the fertility of the soil has been reduced, depriving the sapling of a suitable environment to grow.
Rai said that the innocent love of the child tied to that sapling advocates for the revival of indigenous knowledge on how to restore the fertility of the soil.
Producer Jayaram Dhakal added that Khamari reminds humanity that we are not separate from nature but rather a part of it.
“The play Khamari will be staged for ten days, from September 4 to 14, at Mandala Theatre.
The cast includes Saujan Senehang, Muskan Raut, Ranjana Nepali, Priya Lamjel, Arushi Rai, Prem Chand Pandey, Yugal Shrestha, Sonia Rai, Dilendra Rai, Debika Rai, Mamata Sampang Rai, Shakti Rai, and Renuka Gharti Magar.
