By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Sep,1: Nepathya, a popular folk-rock band, performed for the first time in Malta. Malta has a population of just over half a million, among whom the estimated Nepali population is around 10,000.
According to a press release issued by Nepalaya, Aakash Gurung, a member of the organiser team, said, “Even after we announced the concert, people here didn’t really believe that Nepathya would actually come.”
Just the previous day, an incident had already made Nepathya a subject of news in Malta. While strolling around Valletta, the cultural center filled with six-century-old museums, historic buildings, and artistic landmarks, the band’s singer, Amrit Gurung, was stunned to hear someone singing his own song. Sitting on the street and performing ‘Chari Maryo Sisai Ko Golile’ was none other than Maltese street musician Benny Grima. Amrit first tried to dance along and then joyfully listened to the rest of the song.
Describing that scene, the Malta Daily published a story titled, “Nepalese artist stunned to hear his own song played in Valletta.” The short video of this moment has since been shared thousands of times on TikTok, Facebook, and X (Twitter), and has already been viewed by millions worldwide.
During the concert, Nepathya performed songs including ‘Kosiko Pani,’ ‘Nainatal,’ ‘Jogle Huncha Bhet,’ ‘Resham,’ and more.
Maltese street singer Benny Grima also attended the concert. "This concert felt no less than any international performance. I especially enjoyed the song ‘Resham,’ mentioned," in the press release.
Lead singer Amrit Gurung was accompanied by Dhruva Lama on drums, Subin Shakya on bass guitar, Neeraj Gurung on guitar, Shanti Rayamajhi on madal, and Dineshraj Regmi on keyboard.
Then the band performed in Portugal on August 31.
The final performance of the Europe tour will take place in Belgium on September 3.
