Two including rural municipality chair under police custody

Siraha, March 22: The police have taken Aurahi rural municipality chair Shivaji Yadav and former ward chair and Janamat Party leader Dilip Yadav under police control on Friday evening in connection with the incident of caste-based discrimination against a Dalit family.

The Dalit family's home was demolished reportedly in the name of organising a Mahayagya in Aurahi.

According to Madhesh Province Police Chief and Deputy Inspector General of Police Lalmani Acharya, the duo has been taken into custody for necessary investigation. Further action will be taken after receiving a complaint from the victim's side.

The house of Deepak Malik (Dom) of ward no. 4 of Aurahi municipality was demolished on March 20 to hold a Mahayagya. Chair Yadav himself went with a JCB of the rural municipality to demolish the house. After demolishing the house, the soil of the land covered by the house was also thrown away, leading to strong protests alleging caste-based discrimination.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs has summoned Chief District Officer of Siraha Basudev Dahal to the ministry on Friday for not acting sensitively following the incident. 

The National Human Rights Commission and the National Dalit Commission have also sprung into action, carrying out a field monitoring of the incident.

The matter was also strong raised n the meeting of the House of Representatives on Friday where lawmakers demanded the formation of a parliamentary inquiry committee and drew the government's attention to take immediate necessary action against the culprits. (RSS)
