By Hari Koirala,Urlabari, Feb. 12: While many tend to leave agriculture after securing a political position, Nara Bahadur Moktan, ward chair of Urlabari Municipality-9, Morang, continues to actively engage in farming alongside his public responsibilities.

During office hours, Moktan handles ward affairs, but outside those hours, he is often seen working in the fields.

Encouraging locals to take up agriculture, he runs the Rajghat Agricultural Production Centre, established in 2014 (2071 B.S.), which employs 14 people and produces 250 to 300 kilograms of mushrooms daily.

Moktan has introduced mechanisation in paddy and maize farming in his ward. Despite a shortage of agricultural labourers, he believes technology has made farming more accessible for local farmers.

His efforts have brought drum seeders for planting maize and paddy, along with modern transplanting and harvesting technology to the ward.

Even before being elected, Moktan was actively involved in agriculture, and his engagement has grown further after taking office.

“I have always led by example. If I abandon agriculture now, other farmers might do the same. That’s why I make it a priority after completing my public duties,” he said.

Moktan is also the President of Nepali Congress Morang-1(1). Even the leaders of opposition parties acknowledge his hard work.

“Even before taking office, he was an influential figure, and as a public representative, his connection with the community has strengthened further,” locals said.

Moktan, who spent years working abroad, applies the skills he learned overseas to agriculture.

“I am here to serve the people. My personal expenses are covered through my agricultural earnings. I did not join politics to make money,” he added.
