Mini Great Wall with trekking trail at Tuwachung Jayajum Hill, Khotang

By Rajkumar Bhattarai,Khotang, Feb. 10: A trekking trail has been constructed at Tuwachung Jayajum Hill, the historical and ancestral site of the Kiranti people. The area has become more attractive after the construction of a Mini Great Wall.

The Mini Great Wall, measuring 730 metres in length, has been built without using concrete, utilising only lime and stone. Situated in Halesi Tuwachung Municipality, Ward No. 7 of Khotang, Tuwachung Jayajung Hill is a historic site known as the cradle of the Kiranti Rai civilisation.

According to Mundhum mythology, Tuwachung is where Toyama and Kheyama wove cloth. These ancestral figures are considered pioneers in the art of weaving. It is believed that Toyama and Kheyama began farming and weaving cotton threads into cloth right here. The site still holds two traditional looms made from stone, preserving this ancient craft.

At an elevation of 1,800 metres above sea level, Tuwachung offers a stunning geographical landscape. Visitors can witness mesmerising sunrise and sunset views, with the tall mountains standing in the north gleaming like silver on clear days.  The Mini Great Wall has enhanced the site’s attractiveness, allowing for panoramic views of the Himalayas, hills and the Tarai plains.

Statues of Kiranti ancestors Toyama, Kheyama and Khokchilip have already been installed at Tuwachung.

Along with the Mini Great Wall, a trail to Manjushree Cave and Mangkhim House have been developed under a combined contract of Rs. 55 million. The contractor, Karnel Samriddhi JV, is also constructing parking facilities at Tuwachung.

The 730-metre-long wall is constructed by binding lime, brick dust and fly stone. Stairs have been built using the same materials on slopes, while flat areas are layered with stone and soil to encourage grass growth. The trekking path is 2 metres wide, according to the construction company.

Udhauli and Ubhauli, traditional Kiranti festivals, are celebrated with grand Sakela dances at Tuwachung. The Mayor of Halesi Tuwachung Municipality, Bimala Rai, said that the stone wall was constructed to reduce risks during the dances, especially due to the steep terrain.
