By Our Correspondent,Kawasoti, Dec. 3: Mustard can be seen blooming in most places in Nawalpur at this time.
It is estimated that the area of oilseed cultivation has increased in the district, which is considered a pocket area of mustard.
As farmers are increasingly attracted to mustard cultivation in the district, the area and production are increasing.
The area of mustard cultivation, which has been continuously declining over the years, has increased this year and the production is expected to increase as the mustard has flowered well, according to the Agricultural Knowledge Centre, Nawalpur.
According to the AKC, Nawalpur, oilseed crops were cultivated in an area of 2,443 hectares of land in the district last year and 2,971 tonnes of oilseed was produced.
Among the oilseed crops produced, 1,283 tonnes of mustard and 1,688 tonnes of sorghum was produced, said Kul Prasad Tiwari, Chief of the Agricultural Knowledge Centre, Nawalpur.
He said that the area of mustard cultivation has increased by 10 hectares of land this year compared to the last fiscal year 2023/24.
Sanjay Dhakal, an agricultural crop expert at the AKC, Nawalpur, said that farmers are attracted to mustard cultivation because it is more profitable than other crops.
Similarly, farmers are encouraged towards mustard cultivation as they can crush the mustard they produce themselves to get oil instead of using the oil bought from the market.
He said that mustard cultivation has flourished in the district because it is easy to plant mustard and does not cause much trouble.
Ram Bhandari of Devchuli Municiplaity-1 expressed his hope that the production of mustard will increase this year as flowers look good.
According to him, he has planted mustard in around one bigha of land.
Kawasoti, Madhyabindu, Devchuli and Gaindakot municipalities of the district are considered mustard pocket areas. The mustard yield stands in the district at around 1.08 tonnes per hectare.
He said that he believes that the provision of advanced seeds along with consultancy by the Agricultural Knowledge Centers and municipalities is likely to increase the production of mustard.
