By Yadu Prasad Bhatta,Manang, Dec,1: With the onset of winter, temperatures in Manang have dropped significantly, causing rivers, streams and lakes in the district to freeze.
By the end of November, these water bodies are getting transformed into solid ice. Depending on the altitude, rivers and lakes across the region begin to freeze. Most rivers, streams and glacial lakes above 3,000 metres are gradually freezing.
Tilicho Lake, situated at an altitude of 4,919 metres, along with Kecho Lake (Ice Lake) at 4,600 metres in Bhraka, Dona Lake in Nachai of Dharapani and Ponkar Lake in Thoche, are among the frozen water bodies, according to Sonam Gurung, Ward Chairperson of Neshyang Rural Municipality-6.
The freezing temperatures have also affected drinking water sources, with reports of frozen springs. According to the District Police Office, Manang, daytime temperatures remain below zero, while nighttime temperatures range between minus 8 and 12 degrees Celsius.
Locals reported that water pipelines in areas like Timang, Thanchok and Chame have also started freezing.
From the end of November to February, most glacial lakes in Manang turn into solid ice.
Rivers, streams and lakes remain frozen at night, only resuming flow during the day, said the Armed Police Force, Nepal, stationed in Manang. Even water taps have stopped flowing due to the plunging temperatures.
Despite the harsh cold, tourists, both domestic and international, continue to visit Manang to witness the frozen lakes. Walking on the frozen surfaces of these lakes has become a unique experience for visitors, according to locals.
The ice-covered lakes, snow-covered landscapes and stunning Himalayan views make Manang a popular destination during the winter.
Binod Gurung, Chairperson of the Tourism Entrepreneurs Committee, highlighting the unique features of Manang's lakes, said, "During the winter, the lakes freeze with a pristine blue colour, they turn white in the rainy season and showcase mesmerising reflections of the surrounding Himalayas in the summer."
Tourists particularly enjoy playing on the frozen lakes, making the region an ever-attractive destination, he added.
