Police for serving people: CM Karki

Biratnagar, Oct 16: Chief Minister of Koshi Province Hikmat Kumar Karki recognized the role of police as the first government of the public and thus said that the police should not disappoint but serve the public.

Addressing a celebratory programme organized by the Koshi Province Police Office in Biratnagar marking the 69th Police Day today, CM Karki commended the international reputation Nepal Police had earned by solving crimes and bringing the culprits to justice. 

Nepal Police needs upgrading with the changing times to maintain its credibility, Karki said, pledging to well equip the Koshi Province Police Organization with adequate resources within two years once the police adjustment process is carried out. The police upgrade should go in line with the advancement in the information technology. 

Prodding the federal government to introduce Police Act at the earliest, he pressed for timely adjustment of provincial police organization. 

CM Karki noted the vital role of police in maintaining law and order, good-governance and improving governance system. He, however, lamented over the lack of resources and means facing the Nepal Police despite its proud history of seven decades. 

According to him, the provincial government had hugely invested in the police organization since the enforcement of federalism. 

Similarly, Minister for Internal Affairs and Law Leela Ballav Adhikari acknowledged the role of police in disaster response efforts apart from maintaining law and order. Emphasizing continued improvement in police's efficiency and professionalism, he shared that the provincial government had supported the province police in construction of 58 buildings, buying 14 police vans and hundreds of motorcycles.

Likewise, Biratnagar metropolitan city's Mayor Nagesh Koirala insisted that the police should not give in to any external pressure and influences while delivering its duties. 

Chief Secretary of the Provincial Government Kedarnath Sharma appreciated the positive perception of Nepal Police among the public.

In the programme presided by SSP Jay Sapkota, Sushila Sapkota was honoured with Rs 25,000 in recognition of her contributions in women and children sector.

Kul Bahadur Thapa, Assistant Sub Inspector of Police working in Paanchthar district was also feted with cash prize Rs 25,000 for his excellent performance in traffic management.

On the occasion, Sub Inspector of Police Gopal Bahadur Thapa was felicitated with Rs 100,000 for his outstanding performance in the Koshi Province. (RSS)
