Host Nepal with one win in group stage of Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Trophy

By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Oct. 5: The host, Nepal’s men’s and women’s teams, could only win a single match out of the seven matches they played in their respective groups and categories in the Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Trophy at Dasharath Stadium on October 4. 

The Nepali men’s team lost to the two group members – Uzbekistan and Bahrain. The men’s team would have progressed to the confrontation for the Trophy had they won any of the two matches.

Nevertheless, Nepal suffered a lousy defeat to Uzbekistan; a loss by a score of 24-0. The host lost by 27-7 to Bahrain. The seven points were earned in the final seconds of the match. 

Uzbeikstan has progressed to the next stage as the Group B winner after defeating both Bahrain and Nepal. Bahrain is facing the Phillipines in the Round of 8 while Uzbekistan is facing Jordan.

The Nepali men’s team has entered the ‘Challenge’ category, where the third-positioned teams compete. Thus, Nepal will be playing Qatar on October 5.

On the other hand, it was the women’s team who gave Nepal a win on the first day. Nepal defeated Uzbekistan in the final group-stage match on Friday evening with a score of 12-7.

Drawn in Group A with the Philippines, Guam and Uzbekistan, Nepal lost to the other two teams. The women’s team lost by 37-0 to the Philippines and 17-5 to Guam.

The women’s team has entered the ‘Bowl’ category after two losses.
