Wrestling in Kalapathar

blog

By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, May 30:A friendly international wrestling match was organised in Kalapathar, a popular area near the Everest Base Camp, on the occasion of International Everest Day on Wednesday. The International Everest Day is marked every year on May 29 to remember the first successful summit of Mount Everest by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953.

The wrestling match was organised at an altitude of 5,644 metres under the support of the Nepal Women Wrestling Foundation. It was the first time that the Himalayas witnessed wrestling.

Nepal’s Bhagawati Khadka aka Unika wrestled America’s Danielle Morrison aka Dani Mo in a makeshift ring with the view of Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world, in the background. Nepali wrestler Asmita Jureli was the referee of the match.

Bhagawati, who defeated Danielle, informed that she wanted to create records and history in wrestling. “The match in Kalapthar is also likely to be a world record as wrestling is not played in such a high altitude,” she added.

According to the organisers, the step was initiated to promote wrestling, especially women’s wrestling.

Similarly, comedian Shiva Shankar Rijal aka Jogindar also performed before the wrestling match kicked off. The Foundation also thanked All Around Treks’ Managing Director Sonam Sherpa for facilitating the local needs.
