Dharan locals elated as river water reaches local stream

BY OUR CORRESPONDENT,Itahari, June 14: People in Dharan have finally succeeded in bringing water from the Kokaha River to the settlement. With the success of labour contribution campaign put forward by Harka Raj Rai Sampang, Mayor of Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City, they have become able to bring the water on the 98th day of the campaign from the river located 42 km away from the city. They discharged the water in Pakuwa Khola after bringing it from Kokaha River.

Mayor Sampang himself passed the water to Pakuwa Khola on Tuesday afternoon, informed project manager of the campaign Datta Kumar Limbu.

The participants of the campaign had laid a 42-km-long pipeline for the transfer of the water. During the process, they had coordinated with the neighboring municipality, Barahakshetra. Some of the parts of the pipe were placed in this municipality.

According to Susan Thapa, technician of Dharan Water Supply Management Board, water supply for the human settlements of Dharan was cut through the difficult hilly area from Kokaha River to Pakuwa Khola. Thapa said that there was a plan to take out the water brought to Pakuwa Khola and bring it to Sumnima and Swastika tanks, which are about 7 km away from there. They had already extended pipe from Pakuwa Khola to the tanks during the campaign, he added.

Meanwhile, Mayor Sampang, who had been continuously working in the field till the last phase of the campaign, has expressed his gratitude towards all the participants. More than Rs. 40 million, pipes, food and others supplies were received in aid for the campaign from people at home and abroad. 

As part of the campaign, thousands of people had contributed labour every Saturday.
