By Our Correspondent,Kawasoti, Feb. 27: Number of people rearing pheasants (Kalij) commercially has been increasing in East Nawalparasi.
Commercial pheasant rearing has been flourishing in the district as young people are actively involved in the pheasant rearing business.
Farmer Ram Thapa said that even though young people are attracted towards pheasant farming, they are becoming worried due to the lack of market.
Nandalal Lamichhane of Nawalparasi East Kawasoti, who has been rearing pheasants commercially, is worried about the marketing problem even though the income from this business is good.
Lamichhane, who started the pheasant rearing business by renting 10 katthas of land for the last one and a half years, still has more than 500 pheasants in his firm and the target is to increase to 10,000 in the coming year.
Even though there is a good demand in the market for the pheasants, farmers are disappointed saying that there is a problem in marketing.
If the problem of marketing is resolved, the attraction of people to this sector will increase, said businessman TN Thapa.
Lamichhane said that the government should make necessary arrangements for its marketing to increase its production by attracting more youths in this sector.
He said that since the pheasant was brought into Nepal from Holland, it had good sales in the beginning, but now marketing is the main problem.
Now, pheasants are sold at a rate of Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 3,000. Pheasant is not only considered the best and cleanest bird for health, but because its meat is tastier than others, it is thought that it is only consumed by the rich.
So, it is necessary to make proper arrangements for the easy supply of pheasants.
