By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Feb. 9: Communication and Information Technology Minister Rekha Sharma has asked the Nepali filmmakers why the foreign films survive for months in the local theatres and local movies get lifted in a single day.
While inaugurating a two-day seminar titled 'Coding Climate Change into Films' organised by the Film Directors Society in collaboration with UNDP on Tuesday, Minister Sharma stressed the need for finding out the reason for the poor show of local movies.
Minister Sharma said, "There is a situation where foreign films are shown in the Nepali halls successfully but our films are not doing well.
What should the Film Development Board do and what should the Ministry do to promote Nepali films? Let's discuss. But this situation needs an end.”
She said that the filmmakers should work to increase quality rather than quantity and discussions on topics like climate change would help diversify the subject matters.
"Songs, music and films have a great contribution to the social and political changes in Nepal," she added. “It is now hot in winter like in summer, what is the reason for this, we are eager to see it on the screen."
Minister Sharma recalled that at one time she was also at the forefront to stop the screening of the Indian cinema in Nepal and said, “Now it is time to compete rather than prohibiting others, Nepali cinema should also become competitive.”
She said that she would take forward the policy work to be done by the ministry and informed that she was preparing to table the Motion Picture Act in the Parliament.
On the first day of the seminar on Tuesday, the participating writers and directors gained information about climate change and its effects.
