Kathmandu, Dec 24: The indigenous Newar community of Kathmandu has supported the initiatives of Kathmandu Metropolitan City to remove illegal settlements.

The Newar community also demanded to make arrangements for alternative settlements for the landless squatters in their concerned hometowns.

Organising a joint press conference by 15 different organisations of the Newar community here today, they said illegal settlements on the Bagmati River bank have added challenges to Kathmandu's cultural identity.

Chairperson of Newa Jatiya Mahasangh, Manoj Newa Khadgi, shared that although they had support for KMC's move to remove illegal settlements, the inconvenience caused to the people living on the river bank should not be ignored.

They have no enmity with any citizens, he added, saying they have only the concern to protect Kathmandu's original identity.

Nepal Khadgi Sewa Samiti, Kapali Samaj, Putuwar Rajbahak Bikas Samaj, Rajak Samudaya Bikas Sangh and others were also the organisations supporting the KMC's move. (RSS)
