Polls Set New Dawn

As autonomous beings, we all prefer to make our own decisions and to stand by our choices. It is so inherent in us that even when our choices are dubious we defend it with all our might. We abide by our choices which range from personal to impersonal in our day-to-day life. Even choosing a career is an act of choice from a range of selected options. When we make choices we feel secure in knowing that we are sovereign and that we are exercising our individual interests and concerns.

It reflects our individual welfare thus affirming that we aren’t just a passenger but are at the driving seat of our life. It isn’t thus surprising that when it comes to elections we stand by our rights to vote. People can be quite defensive over their political views which are nevertheless liable to changes especially when a modicum of persuasion is applied. And politics is an act of persuasion. Politicians are expert at the art of rhetoric that relies on both implicit and explicit persuasion. They promise the world to their constituents, especially one that revolves around fiscal growth, peace, educational reforms and bridged economic gaps.

An age-old art, politics is about swaying the opinions of the masses as seen throughout world history. Ever since its inception in human lives, politics has been an important aspect of our world taking in different forms and shapes. However, it was only in the 19th and 20th century that mass elections started taking place that swept the entire nations in frenzy to choose their next leader. And leaders are looked up as a beacon of hope and venerated for their charisma and rhetoric skills.

The more volatile a nation’s politics, the more lie at stake in its political arena. It creates a feeling of us vs. them. One becomes wary of those who assert politically different views. And political views depend on an individual’s familial and educational background as well as professional interests and social circle. As seen in United States of America today, people are quite radical when it comes to political views and politicians fight tooth and nail for their electoral wins.

As such, elections are a procedure to select a person for public office through the acts of voting. People vote for their favourite choice of representatives in a democratic nation. Undoubtedly, elections ought to be fair and just. But throughout the history of most nations there have been foul play involved in the elections often with disastrous results.

This November, as Nepal gears to carry out its elections for House of Representatives and Provincial Assembly, politicians are vying for the majority of votes. Political parties are seen staging their campaigns and manifestoes while independent candidates too are competing on the political arena. And a fair election will determine the wins and people’s voices will be heard loud and clear.

This is why democracy is the most popular type of governance as people have the autonomy to choose their leaders who can steer the nation in the right direction. On November 20, Nepalis will vote for their leaders and set a new dawn on the nation’s future. Thus the upcoming elections are held in high hopes by Nepali citizens who are bidding for an effective leadership.
