Kathmandu, Nov. 11: Prithvi Narayan Secondary School, located at Ward No. 5 of Tarakeshwar Municipality in Kathmandu district, is going to have a spacious indoor sports complex on its premises.

The multi-purpose complex will have the capacity to accommodate as many as 800 persons.

With the coordination of the Um Hong Gil Human Foundation (UHGHF), Humanspace, Korea, is to extend financial and technical support for the construction of this new infrastructure.

The complex, which will be 40.4-metre long, 25.4-metre wide and 10-metre high, will have a basketball court, volleyball court, badminton court and table tennis court. The complex may also be beneficial for social and cultural development of the community.

“We have come up with the idea of building this facility in order to help students, teachers and the local community people remain healthy through getting involved in various sporting activities such as volleyball and basketball inside the complex,” said Captain Um Hong Gil, the Executive Director of UHGHF.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony organised on the school premises on Tuesday, the legendary Korean alpinist and social campaigner thanked the sponsor (Humanspace) for joining hands with UHGHF for creating such an important infrastructure.

“Because students are the hope, dream and future, they will contribute to the nation’s overall development when they get quality education and stay healthy,” he said.

Mayor of Tarakeshwar Municipality Krishna Hari Maharjan hoped that the Korean donors’ support would be immense help for upgrading the quality of the school’s education and improving the health status of the local people.

Maharjan also extended his gratitude to the donors.

On the occasion, Chairman of UHGHF Lee Jae Hoo suggested that students should learn academic knowledge, skills to live in society and ideas to remain healthy.

“We hope that the school as well as the community will benefit from this project,” he said.

Around 1,100 students are studying in this school.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Humanspace, Korea, Chang Minhoo said that his team was very happy to have an opportunity to work in the health-related sector in Nepal. Humanspace is a digital health startup in Korea.

Chairman of the school management committee Kedar Prasad Aryal said that the Korean donors’ great support had inspired everyone to work together for making it a model school.

Speaking on behalf of students, Purnima Poudel said that the donors’ invaluable support had created a more congenial teaching-learning environment in the school.

More than 1,200 people, including students, teachers, parents and donors, attended the groundbreaking ceremony.

UHGHF, an INGO based in Seoul of South Korea, has remained dedicated to constructing schools in Nepal. Founded at the initiative of Captain Um, who is also an honorary citizen of Nepal, the UHGHF has so far built 16 schools in different parts of the country. Two more schools, including the Privthi Narayan Secondary School, are under construction while one is in the process of receiving the government’s permission.

Once completed, the Privthi Narayan Secondary School will have four modern buildings with 36 classrooms, one library, an ICT lab, a well-equipped Montessori facility and an administrative office. The existing building of the school will also be renovated under this project. This is a Rs. 190-million project. According to UHGHF, the cost for the indoor sports complex will be additional.

Construction of the entire school project along with the indoor sports complex will be completed by next year.
