1,327 doctors receive GSC to go abroad in a year

By Mahima Devkota, Kathmandu, Nov. 10: A total of 1,327 registered Nepali doctors took the good standing certificate (GSC) to go abroad in the year 2021 either to work or study abroad. 

As per the report of the Nepal Medical Council (NMC), as many as 1,502 registered doctors of Nepal took the GSC of which, only 10.45 per cent that is, 175 took the GSC for Nepal while the rest 89.55 per cent aimed to go abroad either to work or study.

The GSC is taken by the registered doctors either for getting a promotion in government jobs or to get affiliated with another council for study or work.

According to Krishna Adhikari, registrar of the NMC, every year many registered doctors take the GSC to work or study abroad. More than 26 per cent, that is 403 of the GSC aimed to go to the Maldives, followed by 21 per cent to go to the UK, 18 per cent to go to the United States, 10 per cent to go to India and 4 per cent to go to Australia. 

He said that every year, a large chunk of registered Nepali doctors go abroad for better opportunities and the trend is on the rise. In the year 2020, 1,087 registered doctors took the GSC, which, is, 72 per cent less in comparison to the year 2021. 

Dr Badri Rijal, general secretary of the Nepal Medical Association (NMA), said the number of registered doctors going abroad has increased tremendously in Nepal due to the lack of lack well-equipped hospitals and handsome pay for doctors in Nepal. 

The UK, The USA, The Maldives, India, Australia, The UAE, Canada, Qatar, Germany, Singapore, Ireland, Saudi, Brunei, Denmark, Hong Kong, Belgium, Bangladesh, Belarus, China, Egypt, Georgia, Guyana, Hungary, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Japan, Korea (S), Kyrgyzstan, Mauritius, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, Philippines, Portugal, Russia, Ukraine and Thailand are the countries which are the choice of the Nepali doctors to work or to study.
