Role of media important for fair election: Chair Jha

Biratnagar, Oct 21: Chairperson of the Rashtriya Samachar Samiti (RSS), Dharmendra Jha, has underscored that the positive role of media was expected to ensure free and fair elections.

Chairperson Jha said it during a media orientation the RSS conducted in collaboration with the Election Commission in the wake of elections to the House of Representatives and Provincial Assembly. Chairperson Jha made a presentation on the role of media and journalists in elections, where he stressed that journalists must not ignore the code of conduct.

Professional integrity is imperative, he said, urging the media for self-regulation and public accountability.

In the orientation which saw the participation of 40 journalists, Joint Secretary of Election Commission, Shaligram Sharma Poudel, made a presentation on the role of journalists, and government employees in elections, the EC's expectation, of free, fair and credible elections, and the importance of authentic information. He said the spread of false information- dis/misinformation- foils the atmosphere for a fair election, so media can play a vital role to counter fake news. (RSS)
