BG breed of paddy plantation begins in Jhapa

By Bishnu Prasad Pokhrel, Jhapa, Aug. 2: The plantation of BG paddy has begun in Kamal Rural Municipality of Jhapa from the first week of September. The plantation is initiated as an experiment with a view to producing seeds of the new variety of the BG paddy.

Agriculture technician Tanka Kattel informed that collective paddy farming is initiated with the assistance of Caritas Nepal. 

Kattel informed that Santhal Alleviation IPM Agriculture Group is formed by including marginalized groups. Barren land is used to test the production of a new variety of paddy.  

The paddy will be harvested around November. The farmers can grow non-seasonal vegetables after harvesting the paddy. 

Kattel said that if paddy gets successfully harvested, it will be planted for three seasons. This trend is already being followed in Jhapa.    

According to the Chief of Agriculture Knowledge Center of Jhapa, Sagar Bista, 99 per cent of paddy plantation has been completed in Jhapa.
