Monsoon arrives a week ahead of normal onset in Nepal

By TRN Online, Kathmandu, June 5: This year's monsoon has entered Nepal today, a week earlier than the normal monsoon onset date. 

According to the Meteorological Forecasting Division (MFD), this year's monsoon system arrived in Province 1 on Sunday. 

"This year's monsoon seems to have entered the eastern part of Nepal before the average date," MFD said in its Special Weather Bulletin, "In other parts of Nepal, the monsoon is expected to start in a few days."

The average date of onset of monsoon in Nepal is June 13. 

According to the MFD, an average of 80 per cent of annual rainfall is received in Nepal from the monsoon system. 

Monsoon originates in the Bay of Bengal and moves along the southern flanks of the Himalayas, bringing it to Nepal. The average rainfall in Nepal is 1,600 mm.
