By Our Correspondent Birgunj, May 28: Rajesh Man Singh, who assumed office as the mayor of Birgunj Metropolitan City on Thursday, has begun work on repairing the dilapidated road of the Ghantaghar area of the city.

On his first day in office, Singh said that the metro would repair the decrepit Ghantaghar road.

He also declared that the residents of the city using household electric meters would no longer have to pay the monthly minimum charge and energy fees charged by the Nepal Electricity Authority for up to 30 units of electricity.

He also announced a similar provision for the charges incurred on the use of 70 irrigation meters. “The metropolitan will bear these costs starting July 17,” he said.

Work on the road began from 9 pm Thursday in presence of Mayor Singh and scores of local residents.

Meanwhile, Singh has asked everyone to refrain from calling him a leader. “I am here to serve, not lead,” he said, stating that he would not participate in any felicitation programme for 100 days. “After a hundred days, we will review our work and decide if we deserve any honour,” he added.

Claiming that he would fulfil all his election promises, Singh urged all residents of Birgunj to help in the city’s development and caution him if he ever lost his way.
