EC warns of invalidating candidacy if candidates violate code of conduct

By TRN Online, Kathmandu, May 2: The Election Commission (EC), Nepal has warned of scrapping the candidacy of any candidate found to be carrying out activities that go against the election code of conduct.

Shaligram Sharma Paudel, the EC spokesperson, issued a statement to this effect on Monday.

Earlier, the EC had reminded the candidates and the political parties of the election code of conduct and the need to uphold it.

In the statement, the EC observed that despite their commitment to follow the code, some parties and candidates were lacking in translating their commitment into practice.

Meanwhile, the EC has asked Kathmandu metropolitan city Mayor candidate Keshab Sthapit for a 24-hour clarification.

The EC has argued that Sthapit's expression at a programme at a Dhumbarahi-based National College was against the election code of conduct.

Sthapit was found to have retorted to a lady who asked him about the 'Me Too' and the blame against him saying, "You are (a) nice lady, but your mouth is ugly." "Shall I get it published that this sister is involved in prostitution?"

The EC has asked Sthapit to furnish replies within 24 hours about his abusive expressions at the programme.
