So why should we Nepalis or citizens of the other South Asian (SA) countries observe how India is celebrating its 75th year of Independence? Nepal is the only SA country that was never colonised.
It was a proud moment for Nepal when the news surfaced that it has nearly tripled its tiger population in 2022. Now there are 355 tigers in Nepal, a fact that speaks for itself. It was in 2010 when Nepal committed to doubling its tiger population within a decade and now it has reached its goal quite successfully. Nature is certainly bewildering. It has species that aren’t just mesmerising and unique to look at but also work in tandem to balance the ecology which has become quite precarious as of late. Among animals, species are classified into two groups: vertebrates (those animals with backbones) and invertebrates (those animals without backbones). Among the vertebrates there are five well-known classes such as mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians.
The inmates and detainees of the prison in Martadi, Badimalika Municipality-9, in Bajura district, have been leading a miserable life. Established in 1980, the Bajura prision is in a dilapidated condition, and the concerned authorities have yet to take measures to bring it back to its original state. The rare species of Sarus Crane are being spotted regularly in Mantriphanta, in Bhajani Municipality-3, Kailali district. For the last few years, the birds started appearing regularly in that area during the summer season. This season too, three Sarus Cranes with one chick have been appearing in the area. Ornithologist Hirulal Dangoura said that the birds have made a comeback in the area after years of disappearing.
About Rs. 40 million has been spent from the government for fish farming in the mountainous district of Solukhumbu. Veterinary Hospital and Animal Services Expert Centre Okhaldhunga and Directorate of Livestock and Fisheries Development, Biratnagar distributed about Rs. 39.6 million to 12 firms in different places of the district for trout farming during the last four fiscal years.
Four years ago, the Biratnagar Milk Supply Scheme (BMSS) of Dairy Development Corporation (DDC) was supplying milk products to the market after collecting 40,000 litres of milk daily. The Biratnagar project of the DDC, which became the only organisation to buy milk produced by farmers after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, purchased about 100,000 litres of milk daily. After buying up to 100,000 litres of milk every day and having problems managing its market, the province government provided Rs. 50 million grant to upgrade the powder plant to be able to operate 24 hours a day and establish a new ice bank.
For the first time, the Government of India has agreed to construct a 42km long concrete embankment on the Rapti River to control erosion and flooding in Banke district. For about a decade and a half, Nepal has been demanding with India to construct the embankment, but after discussions held at different times and stages, now the Indian side has agreed to give a grant of Rs. 10.44 billion to build a concrete embankment on the river.
Finance Minister Janardan Sharma Prabhakar has said that the federal government is committed to providing necessary support to solve the drinking water problem of Dharan Sub-metropolitan City. During a meeting with Mayor Harka Sampang of Dharan at the former’s office in Singha Durbar on Tuesday, Minister Sharma assured that after completing necessary technical preparations, the federal government would support the latter to raise necessary budget to complete the water supply project.
Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has again decided not to reduce the prices of fuel. Although the NOC received the reduced rate of fuel price from India on Tuesday, the corporation has decided to keep the price unchanged citing that it was still facing a loss on fuel sale and has big debt obligations. “We still have a lot of debt and payment arrears, so we could not adjust the price now,” said Umesh Prasad Thani, managing director of the corporation, by organising a press conference on Tuesday.

According to the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) report released today, the total remittance inflow amounted to Rs. 1007.3 billion in FY 2021/22, up from Rs. 961 billion recorded in FY 2020/21.
