The Bill for the Amendment to the Investigation of Enforced Disappeared Persons, Truth and Reconciliation Commission Act 2014 (the TJA Amendment Bill) was presented to Parliament on 15 July 2022. The Bill is still under consideration in parliament. Since the Bill was presented to parliament for endorsement, voices of concern have emerged among the conflict victims, human rights and civil society organisations and other stakeholders.
Infrastructures like transportation, communication, energy, irrigation, water supply, airports, sanitation, healthcare and education services play a crucial role for a country’s economic and social development. Though Nepal accords top priority for infrastructure development in its five-year plan and annual budget, the progress is not so satisfactory. General people can exchange clean and fresh currency notes from September 11 as the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has planned to circulate clean notes considering the major festivals of Dashain and Tihar. The central bank will provide new and clean notes facility from September 11 (Sunday), targeting festivals like Dashain and Tihar, said information officer of NRB Narayan Prasad Pokharel. The general public can get the exchange facility for notes worth Rs. 18,500 with Rs. 5, Rs. 10, Rs. 20, Rs. 50 and Rs. 100 denominations.
Farmers of Jumla are now busy picking organic apples and marketing them. Apples, which have been picked since the first week of Bhadra, have started reaching the market. Farmers have supplied matured ripe apples to the market this time. The organic apples of Jumla have now reached in various markets of the country, including Surkhet, Nepalganj and Kathmandu. According to chief of the District Agriculture Development Office, Ganesh Adhikari, the main source of income of the farmers of Jumla is apples, which started reaching the market with maturity.
Dengue cases have been increasing rapidly across the country with detection of more cases in the Kathmandu Valley and the western Terai in the recent days. Besides three districts of the Valley – Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur – the cases have increased significantly in Banke, Dang, Bardiya of Lumbini Province and Saptari of Madhes Province. As of Sunday, the Ministry of Health and Population reported 2816 dengue cases in the Kathmandu Valley, with the highest cases in Lalitpur (1832) followed by Kathmandu (888). The nationwide tally was 5029 as of Sunday.
The Election Commission Nepal (ECN) said on Monday that it was inappropriate to amend the election-related laws in such a way that the terms of the House of Representatives (HoR) and the Provincial Assembly become different. The election body said that its attention was drawn to the introduction of a Bill in the Federal Parliament to amend the House of Representatives Election Act, 2017 and Provincial Assembly Member Election Act, 2014 with provisions relating to the tenure of the HoR and the Provincial Assembly.
Haunted by physical and psychological torture he went through during a decade-long armed conflict, a man from Rukum West has not dared to return home even 16 years after the end of the conflict. Sher Bahadur B.K., 40, of Bhandarikanda in Musikot Municipality-6 of the district, refuses to return home because of traumatising torture he suffered as a teenager, his mother Parbati Kami said.
Kathmandu, Sept. 5: The Election Commission (EC) has determined a total of 10,888 polling stations across the country for upcoming elections to the members of House of Representatives and province assembly set for November 20. It may be noted that there were a total of 10,756 polling stations in the local level elections held on May 13 earlier this year. The Election Commission reviewed the number of polling stations also considering the number of voters, convenience and security sensitivities in accordance with the Polling Station and Voting Centre Fixation Work Procedure, 2077. The EC took the decision to make polling management effective and ensure easy access of voters to the voting process. In line with the arrangements specified in the Working Procedure, the revision was also grounded on the recommendations received from the district polling station and voting centre fixation recommendation committee. The recommendations were also premised on several aspects such as voters' density, access to polling station, building, communications, electricity, transport, status of infrastructure, security and geographical situation and consensus among electoral stakeholders. According to the EC Spokesperson Shaligram Sharma Poudel, the number of polling station has reached 10,888. (RSS)
