As the vote counting of November 20 elections is coming to an end, the five parties in the ruling alliance are likely to win simple majority seats in the House of Representatives (HoR) and in all seven provinces across the country. As of Monday, election results of 160 constituencies of HoR have been announced. Of them, the Nepali Congress won 53 seats and is leading in three other constituencies. The CPN-UML won 42 seats of the House and is leading in one constituency. Vote counting is yet to begin in two constituencies --- Syangja 2 and Bajura --- whereas the Election Commission has decided to conduct re-polling in 10 polling centres in Dolakha district of Bagmati Province.
Six political parties have received enough votes under the Proportional Representation (PR) system to become national parties as of Monday evening. As per the results published by the Election Commission on 7.30 pm Monday, parties of the ruling coalition Nepali Congress and CPN (Maoist Centre), parties of the opposition alliance CPN (UML), Rastriya Prajatantra Party and Janata Samajwadi Party-Nepal, and the newly-formed Rastriya Swatantra Party have crossed the required threshold to become national parties. As stated in Section 52 of the Political Parties Act 2017, only those parties who win at least one seat under the First-Past-The-Post system and get a minimum of 3 per cent of the total votes counted under the Proportional Representation system in the election for the House of Representatives will be recognised as national parties. The nation spends a huge sum of money to conduct an election. That’s because every vote cast matters to decide the future leaders of the county. One can win or lose an election by just a single vote. But, in four constituencies of Mahottari, more than 1,600 votes cast by the voters for the election to the House of Representatives and Provincial Assembles in the First-Past-the-Post (FPTP) category were invalid. The number of invalid votes is higher than the vote margin between the winner and his closest rival.
