Qatar chapter of Madhesi Ekta Samaj has organised a cultural programme on the occasion of this year’s Judshital and Eid festivals in Doha on Friday. Finance Minister of Madhes Province Sanjay Kumar Yadav and founder of Madhesi Ekta Samaj Dr. Rabindra Kumar Yadav participated in the function from Nepal and UAE respectively. Similarly, hundreds of participants from across Qatar reached Doha to attend the function. On the occasion, they exchanged best wishes and greeted each other. Several artists had performed on cultural songs and dances of Terai-Madhes. Fashion Network Nepal, led by artist and model Prasant Tamrakar, is organising Nepal Fashion Festival, a pioneering event in the country’s fashion scene. Talking to The Rising Nepal, Tamrakar said that the festival aims to link Nepal’s skilled manpower to international markets. The festival is scheduled from May 24 to May 26 at Heritage Garden in Sanepa, Lalitpur. The festival will underscore youth and women empowerment, said Tamrakar.

Seven out of 10 districts of Karnali Province are found food insecure districts every year. Those districts are seen as insecure districts as more than 23,000 tonnes of food is in short supply annually. Jumla, Kalikot, Humla, Mugu, Dolpa, Rukum West and Jajarkot are food insecure districts while Surkhet, Dailekh and Salyan only are food secure districts of Karnali. According to Directorate of Agricultural Development, Surkhet, around 23,434 tonnes of food grains are insufficient in seven districts of Karnali every year. According to the National Census 2078, the population of Karnali Province is 1,688,412. Based on this figure, one person in Karnali needs 201 kg of food grains annually. But now the annual production is 320,890 tonnes in the province. Karnali Province needs 344,324 tonnes of food to become self-sufficient in food. Tilak Prasad Pandey, agriculture extension officer of Directorate of Agriculture Department, said that in order to make the other seven districts self-sufficient in food grains, apart from Surkhet, Dailekh and Salyan, around 350,000 tons of food grains are required.
US, Apr. 28: Microsoft on Thursday said its profit rose 20% for the January-March quarter as it tries to position itself as a leader in applying artificial intelligence technology to make workplaces more productive. The company reported quarterly net income of $21.93 billion, or $2.94 per share, beating Wall Street expectations for earnings of $2.82 a share. The Redmond, Washington-based software maker posted revenue of $61.86 billion in the period, its third fiscal quarter, up 17% from the same period a year ago. Analysts polled by FactSet expected Microsoft to post revenue of $60.86 billion for the quarter.
Nepal-Pakistan Friendship and Cultural Association (NPFCA) organised a 19th free medical camp on the premises of Shree Buddha Secondary School at Lele of Godawari Municipality on Saturday. Nepali doctors graduating from Pakistan served over 300 patients including the elderly, children, women and those from the lower strata of society. Doctors checked up patients with diabetes, ENT disease, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Patricians, gynecologists and orthopedic doctors also provided the service to needy patients.
Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizen Bhagwati Chaudhary directed structural improvements of the National Child Rights Council. Minister Chaudhary, also the Chairman of the council, on Saturday gave directions by conducting the first meeting after being appointed as the minister. Stating that the council was a specialised governmental body working in the field of child rights, she directed the council to work on policies, plans and programmes focusing on child rights, aiming for governmental reforms and strengthening the impact in the field. The meeting decided to conduct an investigation into various issues related to child homes and reforms and to empower such institutions.
Atul Keshap, Senior Vice President of the US Chamber of Commerce, a leading organisation of American businessmen, met Finance Minister Barsaman Pun on Friday. Keshap, who led private sector representatives to participate in the 3rd International Investment Summit to be held on April 28-29 in Kathmandu, met with Minister Pun on Friday at the Ministry in Singha Durbar. He said that many American investors were willing to invest in Nepal. He informed Minister Pun that Coca-Cola, a multinational company currently located in Nepal, was preparing to increase its investment on a large scale. He said that American companies were willing to invest heavily in the information technology sector and international level fun parks. "Coca-Cola is expanding investment on a very large scale," he said. "We are willing to invest in international level fun parks and information technology."
The government has started the process of sovereign credit rating of the country which had been stopped for three years. The sovereign credit rating is a measurement of a government's ability to repay its debts and show the picture of the country's financial situation. Similarly, sovereign credit rating is done to get real information about the country's investment risk situation. Foreign investors have taken sovereign credit rating as a prerequisite for investment. Due to lack of credit rating, Nepal has not been able to take commercial loans for large infrastructures from international development partners. With the aim of increasing foreign investment, the government announced the sovereign credit rating through the budget of the fiscal year 2018/19. The government had issued a public notice and invited companies for sovereign credit rating. The world's three major rating companies, Fitch, Moody's and S&P Global, applied.
