Flyovers play an important role in reducing traffic congestion along the roads in big cities across the globe. However, Kathmandu has been without one even 150 years after the construction of the first flyover in the UK. The world’s first railroad flyover was constructed in 1843 at Norwood Junction railway station in London to carry railway vehicles over the Brighton Main Line. Holborn Viaduct, believed to be the world’s first motorable flyover, was constructed at Holborn, the UK, in 1869. Since then, the practice of building flyovers flourished across Europe first and then around the world.

In between August 24 and August 29, a total of 217 Nepalis were stopped by Nepal Police from boarding their flights to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) under visit visa from the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA). The individuals were detained by the Anti-Human Trafficking Bureau (AHTB) on the basis of fake documents prepared by the individuals to get the visa. “The government has laid out the criteria for Nepalis to apply for a visit visa. During inspection at the airport, many were found carrying fake documents to fulfil the criteria following which they were stopped from leaving,” said Superintendent of Police (SP) Dan Bahadur Malla.
On November 17, 2021, Nepal started providing e-passport with an aim to deliver quality passports in terms of security and design as per the guidelines of the International Civil Aviation Organisation. It was a significant achievement in Nepal’s passport history. From handwritten passports used for decades, Nepal started issuing machine-readable passports in 2010 and since last year e-passports are being distributed.
After the Tribhuvan International Airport’s customs office tightened security checks, gold smugglers are found applying one inventive method after another to outsmart customs officers as well as police. This week, the TIA arrested two individuals who were carrying gold dust pasted to their underwear, vests and pants which they were wearing. One of the individuals was detained upon suspicion from the Tribhuvan International Airport’s welcome gate on August 14 He was 24-year-old Som Bahadur BK, a resident of Ward No. 1 of Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality of Sindhupalchowk district.
On Sunday morning, traffic police officers conducted a surprise check on school and college buses in different parts of the Kathmandu Valley. According to Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) Mira Chaudhary, traffic police had received several complaints regarding the ways school buses have been operating on the roads. A total of 16 buses of different schools and colleges, including prominent and reputed ones, were found to be flouting the set standards.
Utilisation of ridesharing services has expanded exponentially in the Kathmandu Valley as it has delivered a convenient mode of public transport and provided employment to many. With the introduction of Tootle in 2017 as the first ridesharing platform using private two-wheelers in Nepal, Pathao came as a strong contender in 2018. “Embossed number plate will be installed on vehicles, and Smart Card will replace the existing driving license” was one of the policies under the Three-Year Interim Plan (2007/08-2009/10) introduced by the National Planning Commission. It was eight years later that the Department of Transport Management (DoTM), in 2015, called a tender to craft and distribute embossed number plates. It was awarded to Decatur-Tiger IT, a Bangladeshi company, on May 30, 2016, at $44 million. As per the contract, 2.5 million vehicles were to be equipped with embossed number plates by mid-September, 2021. The deadline was extended by two years and four months until mid-November, 2023.
Nepal Police has four specialised bureaus – Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), Anti Human Trafficking Bureau (AHTB) and Cyber Bureau – established to tackle specific crimes. Among the four bureaus, only the CIB, which was established in 2009, has its own building in Maharajgunj, Kathmandu.
From public places to offices to private houses, CCTV cameras have become ubiquitous across the country. However, people are mostly unaware about the rules to be followed while installing CCTV cameras, and authorities are reluctant to enforce them. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, CCTV/Camera Installation and Operation Procedures 2072 should be followed while installing CCTV cameras in public, commercial or private places.
The Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police on Monday arrested a YouTuber on charge of publishing illegal materials in electronic form. The arrested individual was made public through a press statement by the bureau on Tuesday. According to the statement, 22-year-old Prabesh Lama, a permanent resident of Nuwakot and currently living in Kathmandu, was arrested for uploading a video with obscene title and spreading obscenity in the society. Lama operates ‘4 Real TV’, a YouTube channel which has 64,000 subscribers. Officials at the bureau informed that Lama was arrested on the basis of the video titled ‘Nepali Girls on Does size matter? (must 100 watch 'till the end!)’, which was uploaded on May 2, 2022.
The Health Insurance Board (HIB) has requested associated health centres to not suspend the services under health insurance scheme, assuring that the board would provide reimbursement at the earliest. Recently, major tertiary hospitals have been expressing inability to continue providing services under the scheme, citing that they have not received reimbursement for the services they have provided.
