Kathmandu, July 22: Waste segregation from the household was one of the first initiatives taken by the newly elected Mayor of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) when he assumed his office in May 2022.The locals had also started segregating the waste in their homes for a couple of days as the KMC's request was beneficial from the standpoint of environment and health. However, it could not continue."It was a quality decision by the KMC to collect separate waste – biodegradable and non-biodegradable. I remember buying a new bin for the cause. Three other families in our house had also started the practice. However, waiting for a garbage vehicle for more than a week with organic waste's stench was extremely difficult," said Sanish, a landlord of a house in Tinkune, Kathmandu.According to Kunjan, a tenant in the house of Sanish, separating the waste was not difficult, but they could not keep degradable waste for a long time as it reeked. "If biodegradable waste is separated, garbage collectors should visit the households timely. Since there is no standard time for a garbage vehicle, we stopped segregating the waste. It is because mixed waste does not stink much," said Kunjan.Showing a pile of garbage on the side of the main gate of the house, Kunjan and Sanish informed that it had been more than two weeks since the waste was collected from the area. All the houses in the area complained of stench as the waste, that had now piled up, had not been collected.Meanwhile, garbage collectors who visit the alley leading to Sanish's house informed that they were not asked by the authorities to strictly collect separate waste."We just collect whatever waste people have for us. There are several reasons that affect our time due to which there is never a regular routine for garbage collection at a certain area. We collect the waste here and dump it under the Balkumari Bridge," said a waste collector in his mid-30s as he piled sacks of waste on an old tractor with a leaky trailer as liquid waste dripped below.Talking to The Rising Nepal around two weeks ago when they came to collect the waste in front of the house of Sanish, the waste collector informed that the waste was segregated in Balkumari.Underneath the Balkumari Bridge where garbage collected from nearby households is dumped, several recyclers can be seen searching for non-biodegradable waste. "People throw several items as garbage. However, it also contains some valuable items for us as we can sell them. The garbage employees say that it was not of a concern for anyone if we collected something from the waste," said a 16-year-old boy as he searched for something valuable under the Balkumari Bridge on Monday. However, regarding the KMC, they have other problems to solve before making people segregate waste on a regular basis. Moreover, the transportation of waste to the landfill site has been obstructed by the locals in Bancharedanda for a few days now, leading to a delay in waste collection across the houses of the KMC and other local levels of the Kathmandu Valley. Organic waste could be seen flowing along several alleys in Sahayoginagar, an area in Tinkune, Kathmandu, when it rained Tuesday evening. The scenario is said to be similar in several other areas of Kathmandu."Waste segregation is important for proper waste management. It has its benefit to the environment and people's health. However, we are still struggling for undisturbed transportation and dumping of waste. First, we need to solve the issue of timely waste collection," said Nabin Manandhar, spokesperson for the KMC.Manandhar informed that the KMC was holding talks with the agitating locals near Bancharedanda to resume dumping waste in the landfill site.Nevertheless, the KMC officials argued that locals could also dump organic waste on their land or reduce the quantity of organic waste by not cooking more than required.
