BY OUR CORRESPONDENT,Syangja, Aug. 10: The Syangja District Court has successfully settled all cases pending for more than two years, setting a remarkable precedent in the judicial sector.

According to Court Registrar Bhumi Prasad Sharma, the court began the year with 352 pending cases and received an additional 1,007 new cases, bringing the total caseload to 1,359. Of these, the court resolved 328 cases, which were from the existing backlog and 716 new cases, resulting in the resolution of 1,044 cases in total.

As of the end of the fiscal year, there were no cases exceeding the two-year limit. The pending cases now include 250 under six months, 41 between six months and one year, 17 between one and 1.5 years, and seven between 1.5 and two years. This achievement aligns with the Supreme Court’s directive to eliminate cases older than two years, making Syangja District Court one of the top performers in the region.

The court exceeded its case settlement target of 68 per cent for fiscal year 2024/25, achieving a settlement rate of 76.82 per cent. Compared to the last five years, this year saw the highest number of resolved cases.

In specific categories, the court recorded an 80 per cent resolution rate in civil disputes, 66 per cent in criminal cases filed by individuals, 68 per cent in government-filed criminal cases, and 100 per cent in both civil and government criminal cases in certain divisions, according to District Judge Basudev Poudel.

Divorce cases made up the largest share, with 521 new filings and 87 carried over from the previous year, totaling 608, of which 518 were settled. Mediation also proved effective, with 38 out of 194 cases (27 per cent), the highest in the country, resolved through reconciliation.

Judge Poudel urged the public to acknowledge and appreciate the court’s positive work while also holding it accountable for any shortcomings.
