By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Aug. 3: Nepal has witnessed a significant increase in the import of electric vehicles (EVs) in the last fiscal year 2024/25.
According to the statistics of the Department of Customs, about 13,569 four-wheeler electric vehicles (car, jeeps and vans) worth Rs. 31.75 billion have been imported during the last fiscal year (from mid-July 2024 to mid-July 2025).
The import of four-wheeler electric vehicles has increased by 16 per cent in terms of quantity and 8 per cent in terms of value in the last fiscal year as compared to previous fiscal year 2023/24.
Around 11,700 four-wheeler electric vehicles worth Rs. 29.48 billion had been imported during in the fiscal year 2023/24.
In the meantime, a total of 9 unassembled four-wheeler electric vehicles with capacity up to 50 KW worth Rs. 6.4 million were imported in the last fiscal year.
Similarly, the country has imported 9,728 three-wheeler electric vehicles worth Rs. 1.01 billion in the last fiscal year.
Likewise, a total of 6,777 unassembled electric three wheelers have entered in the country during the review period.
In the last fiscal year, the government collected revenue of Rs. 20.27 billion while importing all electric vehicles, including four wheelers and three wheelers.
The capacity of most imported four-wheeler electric vehicles ranges between 51 kW to 100 kW.
A total of 7,431 electric vehicles with the capacity of 51 kW to 100 kW have been imported during the review period.
Similarly, a total of 4,732 electric vehicles with motor power up to 50 kW have been imported. The number of electric vehicles with between 101 kW to 200 kW motor power is 1,362 and above 201 kW is 42.
During the last fiscal year, most of the electric vehicles imported into Nepal are Chinese.
Of 13,569 vehicles, a total of 10,207 electric vehicles have been brought from China in the last fiscal year. This is 75 per cent of total import of electric vehicles.
According to the Department, around 3,246 electric vehicles were imported from India, 50 four-wheeler electric vehicles from Malaysia, 45 electric vehicles from Germany, 11 from United States of America, six from South Korea and four from Indonesia during the review period.
The import of electric vehicles has been growing in the country for the last four years after the government adopted the policy of custom subsidy to promote it.
Similarly, in the fiscal year 2020/21, a total of 249 four-wheel electric vehicles (cars, jeeps) were imported while 1,800 four-wheeler electric vehicles (cars, jeeps) were imported in the fiscal year 2021/22 and 4,050 in the fiscal year 2022/23.
