By Our Correspondent,Muktinath, July 27: Lomanthang Rural Municipality in Upper Mustang has distributed induction stoves to all households. It has distributed them free of cost as part of a campaign to eliminate the use of firewood stoves and gas cylinders. Induction stoves were distributed from the ward offices.
With the central electricity transmission line now reaching the area, the first phase of the programme targeted around 480 households within the rural municipality. Priority was given to economically disadvantaged families, persons with disabilities, and senior citizens, said the local level.
According to Chairperson Tasi Nhurbu Gurung, 210 households were provided with induction cookers in the fiscal year 2024/25, and an additional 260 will be distributed within the month of Shrawan (July–August) in the current FY 2025/26.
“We have also provided instructions on how to use the induction cookers. Households that previously used firewood can now cook using induction technology,” said Gurung. Despite the availability of gas cylinders, many households in Lomanthang still cook using firewood.
Local resident Pemba Gurung expressed relief that they no longer have to purchase gas or go out in search of firewood.
Deputy Chairperson Chhyumi Bishst Gurung said that with proper use, the induction cookers can last for about five years. She added that upcoming ward-level programmes will include training on maintenance and usage to ensure continued effectiveness.
Chief Administrative Officer of Lomanthang, Bishal Adhikari, said that the initiative is a step towards making the municipality smoke-free. “The majority of the households in the municipality comprise small families, so cooking with induction stoves will be convenient,” said Adhikari. Each induction cooker costs around Rs. 3,500.
